Heritage and Preservation: Our Places in the Heart

This month we share our happiest memories and our deepest fears,i.e. “our places in the heart.” (Just one or two per participant, please!) Then we’ll do some “critical thinking:” as we get older do we need to reexamine these memories/fears to determine which ones merit preservation and which ones to demolish or renovate? Of those we decide to re-purpose, how can we re-interpret them into more productive attitudes as we get older, but wiser?

In preparation for our April joint meeting with the SAM film group, our March Roundtable topic this month, will be two sub topics: the main content and the technical features of the film; and then a quick run down of basic Zoom meeting practices that facilitate a productive discussion.

At our up-coming March 6, meeting, let's review the biography of Robert Oppenheimer, then familiarize ourselves with some of the large cast of film characters, the film's "sex scene," and the film's technical elements--music, cinematography, marketing. As to the procedures for conducting hybrid Zoom meetings, lets just cover the basics, raising hands to speak, acknowledging the opinions of others, and similar "tips." The film group co-ordinators will run the April meeting.

The April meeting film discussion will be hybrid format, i.e. on line and in person, on Friday, April 12, at 1:30 p.m. at the North Shore Senior Center in Northfield. The price to rent Oppenheimer is $5.99 and is available on Amazon prime,You Tube, Vudu, Apple TV, and Google Play. Details to follow.

Just remember, our March 6, Roundtable is on Zoom beginning at 9:30 a.m. and lasts about an hour.

<![CDATA[February 7 - What's "New" for You]]>Tue, 06 Feb 2024 16:44:42 GMThttp://samgroupil.org/the-roundtable/february-7-whats-new-for-youWhen: Wednesday, February 7
When: 9:30 AM
Location: Zoom Only

What's "New" for You: It's been awhile since we've had a chance to talk. We begin with each of us sharing one thing that's new for you. When we've each had a turn, we discuss why our "news" is newsworthy, that is, why it's important to us. What then is the role in our lives of "the new." What does it say about us, what does it foreshadow or predict about our future? Why is sharing it a good idea?

Note: this zoom meeting will wind up in about 60 minutes, but allow participants to stay longer just to talk. Don't forget to "wave" goodbye!

New Year’s Resolutions in Historical Perspective

This month’s on-line discussion is on Wednesday, Jan. 10, at 9:30 a.m. It begins with a quick review of our own New Years resolutions this year, but then we recall, as best we can, what resolutions were being made by those living during the period 1945-2022, resolutions-past. We continue with our conceptions of resolutions-future in the next fifty years. What do these aspirations say about us today? Are they pretty much the same or do we see patterns emerging?
